Bees and Environment

Pollination is the process of transferring grains of pollen from one plant to another to enable fertilization. Around 80% of flowering plants depend on pollinators inorder to reproduce- and no one does pollination quite like the honey bee!Due to their great numbers, and their ability to communicate to each other plus their behavior of foraging on only one plant species at a time, honeybees are considered the most efficient and effective pollinators. They serve the agricultural industry by increasing the crop yield several times over which encourages farmers to pay beekeepers to have hives located on their land. One Cornell University study estimated that the annual value attributed to honeybees
for their pollination of seeds and crops is $14 billion in the U.S. only. Moreover, 1 out of 3 bites of food is pollinated by the effort of pollinators, mainly honeybees. Despite the different ecosystems, the main role of honeybees is their pollination work and thus, they strongly influence ecological relationships, ecosystem conservation and stability, genetic variation in the plant community, floral diversity, specialization and evolution. In other words, honeybees constitute a crucial element of the ecosystem and environment.
Without them, many species of flowers and plants that we take for granted would die out, biodiversity would diminish and the stability of a healthy ecosystem would be threatened.

Health Benefits of Bees’ Products

Honeybees are social and cooperative insects. These tiny creatures provide humans with 6 natural& beneficial products which are honey, pollen, royal jelly, beeswax, propolis and bee venom.
Honey is the most famous product made by bees using nectar from flowering trees and plants; thus, it varies in color, type and flavor depending upon its flowery source. According to bees, honey is produced as food stores for the hive all year round, and according to humans, it is the only food that includes all the necessary substances to sustain life, including 20% water. This pure, easily digestible food is a natural sweetener, and a perfect substitute of sugar. It has a lot of antibacterial, antioxidants and anti-cancer qualities and aids in reducing allergies, inducing sleep, soothing sore throats, reducing ulcers and yeast infections, maintaining a better blood glucose control, weight loss, skin protection and much more.

Pollen is the powder-like grain produced by the flowering plants for reproduction. It is collected by the bees to feed young larvae in order to help their bodies develop. It is one of the richest natural foods, consisting of up to 55% carbohydrates, 35% proteins,
3% minerals and vitamins, 2% fatty acids, and 5% of diverse other components. Pollen has many benefits for humans especially for men with low sperm count for it helps in increasing it by 50%. Added to that, bee pollen helps to prevent heart disease, treats bladder infections, cold & flu and digestion complications.

Royal Jelly is the third main product. It is a powerful, milky substance secreted from the glands in the heads of bees, mixed with digested pollen and honey and is highly rich in amino acids, hormones, vitamins, potassium, phosphorous,

calcium, iron… Royal jelly is capable of turning an ordinary bee into a queen bee, the only fertile bee in the hive. The queen bee lays around 2000 eggs daily and lives 35 times longer than its workers! Relatively, this super food has magical benefits for humans. It stimulates the neural stem cells which encourage brain growth, memory retention and brain processing speed thus, preventing diseases such as Parkinson and Alzheimer. It also promotes the health of women’s ovum, lowers cholesterol, and has anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and healing properties as well.

Beeswax is a natural wax secreted by the bees and used to build their honey combs. It has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory & anti-viral benefits, protects & softens skin, soothes dry lips and strengthens our immune system.

Propolis is a sticky resin collected by honeybees from the trees and used as a sealant to repair and clean their hive. Humans use it to treat food poisoning, to strengthen bones, and to boost energy. It can also be used as a base for fine wood varnishes.

Bee venom has been found to have medicinal properties, and can be used for treating arthritis, multiple sclerosis and even fibromyalgia, and more recently to treat sexual dysfunction, cancer, epilepsy and depression.

If the bee disappeared of the

surface of the globe then

man would only have four

years of life left. No more

bees, no more pollination, no

more plants, no more

animals, no more man.
